TMJ Pain

The TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, is a common area of problems causing symptoms such as headaches, face, neck or shoulder pain and may cause popping or locking of the mandible, or jaw.

TMJ disorders can be effectively treated conservatively through physical therapy. Existing literature shows that physical therapy addressing splint therapy, stress management, and home exercise program can help clients learn to self treat these disorders.

The following is a list of TMJ precautions that may contribute significantly to TMJ problems: mouth breathing, excessive chewing or sucking, clenching/grinding of teeth, maximal mouth opening, stomach sleeping, poor tongue position and poor posture.

Working in combination with the physical therapists at RehabAuthority, these areas and others that cause TMJ disorder can be corrected to help correct the TMJ.
