MedX Back Program
MedX equipment is designed to accurately test your
low back and neck, identifying existing or potential problems.
Precise measurements of range of motion, strength and endurance
are then compared to established norms. A progressive strengthening
program is then developed to isolate and strengthen the weakened
area. Frequently asked questions may be found after the text
below.
The MedX Lumbar Extension machine provides functional
testing and spinal therapy. A unique method of pelvic stabilization
provides true isolation of the deep muscles of the lumbar spine
(erector spinae and multifidus). Weakness in these muscle groups
has been associated with chronic low back pain and susceptibility
to future back injuries. There are many devices and exercises
which claim to strengthen the spine, but they have been disproved
with scientific testing.
The MedX Cervical Extension machine is similar to
the MedX Lumbar machine in that it isolates the deep musculature
that normally stabilizes the spine. Because the cervical spine must
support the weight of the head, strength deficits in this area often
lead to chronic neck pain and headaches. The isometric test
can be performed every 3 degrees through a 126 degree range of motion.
Typically a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 7 points are tested.
MedX rehabilitation is so effective because it truly
isolates and strengthens specific areas of the spine. By training
specific movements and not allowing abnormal compensations the patient
not only regains needed strength, but also learns to move their
spine properly again.
MedX exercise machines are precisely adjusted to each
individual patient during the first therapy session. The back
or neck muscles are gradually strengthened leading to long-term
success for the patient. The precision of MedX training makes
it much more effective than conventional strength training. The
MedX machines have undergone significant scientific study and have
been compared against a variety of other methods of strength training.
Time and time again MedX has been demonstrated to be superior because
of its unique methods of muscle isolation and the ability to custom
tailor the exercise range of motion, resistance and repetition to
the individual needs of the patient. This leads to fewer flare
ups of symptoms and a much easier rehabilitation process.

What is MedX technology?
- MedX technology isolates low back or neck movements with a unique
system of stabilization. The technology is unique and well researched
and has not been available in Idaho until now. Chronic neck and
back pain can stem from a variety of sources and problems. New
research suggests that one source is significant weakness of the
low back musculature. Most people with chronic pain learn to compensate
with abnormal postures and movements, which compounds the problem
over time. MedX eliminates these abnormal postures and movements,
isolating the neck or low back musculature. By doing this
we can accurately measure range of motion, strength, and endurance
in a precise way that nothing else can.
What kind of problems can the MedX identify?
- One of the leading factors in the development of pain and injuries
is insufficient strength. Recent research has identified
a significant strength component in the development of chronic
low back and neck pain. Additional research has also shown that
after only one episode of low back pain the primary stabilization
muscle of the low back (multifidus) deteriorates and does not
spontaneously recover. One problem with traditional rehabilitation
is that these muscles are not trained by normal exercise routines.
MedX machines are able to isolate and target these problem areas
allowing the patient to perform specific effective rehabilitation.
- The primary focus of the MedX equipment is the treatment of
chronic back or neck pain. Chronic pain is usually defined as
pain lasting longer than 2 months. With chronic back pain there
are significant changes in the discs, muscles, ligaments and even
bone, which can contribute to more pain.
Is back pain caused by having a “weak”
back?
- Although back weakness can be a significant factor many cases
of back pain are not that simple. There are usually multiple
reasons and factors associated with back problems. This
is why a thorough examination by your physician and physical therapist
as well as a complete treatment program are very important to
determine and treat all of the factors involved. MedX technology
is not a cure all. It is simply another tool that can help
measure and treat back problems.
Isn't most back pain just “pulled
muscles”?
- Although there may be muscle guarding (spasm) and pain associated
with back pain this is usually just a symptom of the bigger problem.
Recent scientific studies suggest that one source of back pain
may be chemical changes in the discs. These chemical changes are
the result of not moving the spine and discs normally. Discs
in the spine are avascular, meaning they have no blood supply. Therefore,
they do not heal well after trauma. The only way a disc receives
any nutrition is with full range of motion (ROM) movements. The
last thing most people with an injured back want to do is move
their back, but with inactivity the problem simply becomes worse. Chemicals
begin to build up in the disc and even “leak” into
the surrounding tissues aggravating nerves, muscles and ligaments. Inactivity
also leads to muscle atrophy and deterioration of the joints in
the spine.
Can the MedX help me if I have a herniated
or bulging disc?
- The MedX equipment is specifically designed to isolate low back
or neck movement thus helping the patient move in a safe manner
and restoring normal movement to the spine and discs. Even if
a disc has a bulge or herniation it still responds to movement
and correct movement is essential to restoring disc health.
I've had back surgery. Can the MedX
help me?
- Rehabilitation after back surgery is of utmost importance. Many
of the people who have had surgery went through a long period
of inactivity and pain before their procedure. They then
undergo surgical procedures which can damage soft tissue leading
to further deterioration. Scientific evidence shows that many
of the injured muscles will not recover on their own even with
normal activities. The MedX is a very safe and effective way to
gently start the rehabilitation process and gradually build the
injured area back to normal strength levels.
I'm seeing a chiropractor. Can I use
the MedX too?
- A recent study demonstrated that the combination of chiropractic
care in conjunction with isolated strengthening using the MedX
is an excellent way to eliminate chronic neck and back problems. We
work with a number of chiropractic physicians in the area and
we are more than happy to work with your chiropractor to coordinate
care.
How long will I have to use the MedX?
- The length of treatment often depends on the severity of the
injury and how long it has lasted. Research has shown that 6-10
weeks is a typical length of rehabilitation. Research has also
shown that the strength you develop using the MedX is maintained
by normal activities. This means you DO NOT have to keep
using the MedX after your rehabilitation.
How long does it take to notice results
when using the MedX?
- This is an often-asked question with no simple answer. Most
of our patients use the MedX in conjunction with a thorough physical
therapy program 2-3 times per week and many notice results almost
immediately. Some patients do not notice any changes in their
symptoms initially but there are usually measurable increases
in strength and range of motion. Restoring normal strength and
range of motion is an important first step in recovery of function
and elimination of pain.
How can MedX benefit employers?
- Pre-employment screens utilizing MedX technology are an invaluable
tool for potential employers. MedX technology provides an
objective, accurate measurement of the strength, range of motion
and endurance of a prospective employee's lumbar or cervical muscles. This
can help prevent an injury before it occurs or help with job placement.
